How it works
Three steps, no rounding tricks:
The tip is added to the full bill first, then divided evenly — so tax and tip are shared the same way the food is. Amounts are shown to the cent; if the split leaves a stray penny, the first person covers it.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15 to 20 percent is standard for table service, with 20 percent the common default for good service. Tip 10 to 15 percent for buffets or takeout, and more for exceptional service or large parties.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Etiquette says pre-tax: calculate the percentage on the subtotal before sales tax. Most people just tip on the total shown, which is slightly more generous, and servers will not complain.
How do you split a bill evenly between people?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does exactly that, so everyone pays the same share of food, tax, and tip.
Do I need to tip at a counter or tip jar?
Tipping at counters is optional and usually smaller, a dollar or two, or around 10 percent. Do not feel pressured by the tablet screen; it is fine to skip or tip modestly for counter service.
