Standard 4.0 unweighted scale with plus/minus grades.

How it works

Each grade converts to points on the standard 4.0 scale — A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0. Then:

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ (credit hours)

Courses with more credits pull the average harder — a 4-credit B+ (13.2 points) counts more than a 3-credit A (12 points).

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), which are multiplied by the course's credit hours. Add up all quality points and divide by total credit hours for the weighted GPA.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 for every course. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, so it can exceed 4.0. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

Do plus and minus grades change my GPA?

Yes, on the common scale: an A− is 3.7 instead of 4.0, a B+ is 3.3 instead of 3.0. Those fractions add up across many courses, so plus/minus grading can shift your GPA noticeably.

What GPA do I need for honors or Dean's List?

It varies by school, but Dean's List is often 3.5 and Latin honors typically start around 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 for summa cum laude. Check your institution's exact thresholds.
